Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday publicly thanked the United States leadership for its role in brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. In a statement posted on X, he acknowledged the efforts of US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, describing their involvement as a “proactive role for peace in the region.” The ceasefire agreement was announced following a period of heightened military tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Sharif wrote, “We thank President Trump for his leadership and proactive role for peace in the region. Pakistan appreciates the United States for facilitating this outcome, which we have accepted in the interest of regional peace and stability.” He added that this development marks “a new beginning in the resolution of issues that have plagued the region and prevented its journey toward peace, prosperity and stability.” No reference was made to specific incidents or the terms of the ceasefire.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also reacted to the ceasefire, describing Pakistan as a “peace-loving country” while affirming its defensive capabilities. He expressed support for the agreement and congratulated the civilian and military leadership for their handling of the situation. “Thanks be to Allah Almighty for making Pakistan proud,” he said. Nawaz Sharif also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Sindhu, along with the armed forces.
Pakistan People’s Party Chairman and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari welcomed the agreement, calling it “a victory for diplomacy.” In a statement on X, he said, “Now that both India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire & dialogue, we welcome this as a victory for diplomacy. We appreciate the role of USA, KSA and all countries involved in achieving this historic milestone.” He emphasized that Pakistan has always pursued dialogue and diplomacy and said “war, violence and aggression are never the answer.”
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Gohar Ali Khan and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also praised the ceasefire. Gohar Ali Khan said Pakistan’s response “forced India to come up with the white flag.” Maryam Nawaz credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, General Munir, the armed forces, and Nawaz Sharif for making the nation “proud.” Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar formally announced the ceasefire on X, stating, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”
